Fisheries & Aquaculture Management Policy
WebsiteThe group started to work in May 2004 and applied to the Strategic Research Clusters Seed Funding Program in May 2005. The cluster focuses on the analysis of: management, policy, strategic planning, as well as innovation and governance systems related specifically to fisheries and aquaculture. These sectors are significant to Canada for their domestic contribution to coastal regions (Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic) and for defining Canada’s place in international fora for marine natural resources governance and science. Specific areas of research will include topics such as: indicators for defining environmental and ecological systems; alternative methods for marine resource assessment; development of fisheries systems modeling for decision support; governance structures for integrated oceans management; performance measures for defining health and food security. It is recognized that research in these areas is fundamental to the development, evolution and advancement of the governance of Canada’s extensive marine resources. This covers operational and strategic research questions pertaining to: (i) environmental and ecological sustainability, (ii) socioeconomics and community cultural stability, (iii) economic viability, and (iv) administrative cost and compliance and enforcement management.
