Composition of the Research Ethics Boards
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Ethics Board is composed of
- Ten (10) members who are familiar with the research methods and disciplines relevant to the REB, of whom
- Two (2) are from the Telfer School of Management
- Two (2) are from each the Faculty of Arts
- Two (2) are from the Faculty of Education
- Four (4) are from the Faculty of Social Sciences (including two (2) from the School of Psychology);
- One (1) is a graduate student;
- Two (2) are from the community served by the University of Ottawa while having no affiliation with it;
- At least one (1) must be a lawyer or have a legal background (affiliated or not with the University of Ottawa),
- At least one (1) must be an ethics expert (affiliated or not with the University of Ottawa).
The Health Sciences and Science Research Ethics Board is composed of
- Six (6) faculty members who are familiar with the research methods and disciplines relevant to the REB.
- One (1) if from the Faculty of Engineering
- One (1) is from the Faculty of Science, and
- Four (4) are from the Faculty of Health Sciences;
- One (1) is a graduate student;
- Two (2) are from the community served by the University of Ottawa while having no affiliation with it;
- At least one (1) is a lawyer or has a legal background (affiliated or not with the University of Ottawa);
- At least one (1) is an ethics expert (affiliated or not with the University of Ottawa).
Each REB has a vice-chair (chosen from the existing Faculty or community members) and is presided by a faculty member or by a member of the community.
A Protocol Officer for Ethics in Research acts as the Secretary of each REB. The Secretary is a non-voting member of the REB.
Composition of the Appeal Board
The Appeal Board shall consist of five (5) voting members of whom:
- two (2) members have broad expertise in the methods or in the areas of research that are covered by the of Social Sciences and Humanities REB or the Health Sciences and Health Sciences REB
- one (1) member is knowledgeable in ethics;
- one (1) member is knowledgeable in the relevant law;
- one (1) is a community member.
