Ethics guidelines

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Ethics Board, the Health Sciences and Science Research Ethics Board and the Appeal Board operate under the aegis of the Vice-Rector (Research) and are sanctioned by the Board of Governors of the University of Ottawa.

The mandate of the REBs is to assess and sanction the ethical aspects of all human research projects, conducted under their jurisdiction by their professors and students, prior to their inception and during their execution. The REBs also verify how faculty members plan to take on their ethical responsibilities, whether the research is funded by external granting agencies or otherwise, or whether it is part of a course or not. The REBs must also approve all researches in which students, professors or support staff of the University of Ottawa serve as research participants.

The evaluation of the ethical aspects of research involving human participants will follow the guidelines of the national granting councils (the Medical Research Council of Canada - now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada) set out in the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans. It will also respect the guidelines of national professional associations and will require compliance with all federal and provincial legislation regarding the protection of individuals and of human rights.
