Professors Carissima Mathen and Ian Kerr of the Faculty of Law participated to the 10th Canada-Taiwan Conference on Higher Education held on October 16, 2012. This event was part of a series of conferences proposed by the governments of Canada and Taiwan as a means to improve cultural and educational cooperation.

- In September 2012, representatives of the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) met with the Deans, Vice Deans, and Department Chairs of three Faculties, including Engineering, Health Sciences and Medicine. The purpose of their visit was to establish a platform for bilateral collaboration and identify potential partners in the fields of metabolic research, nursing, nano-medicine and medical education.

- The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology received a delegation of representatives from Taiwan’s National Science Council on May 29th 2012. Research activities in the area of Life Sciences were discussed.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Chair of Taiwan Studies, represented by Professor Simon Scott, presented the lecture “Ryukyu and Taiwan on the East Asian Seas” on March 16 th 2012 at the University of Ottawa. The host of the lecture was Dr. Man-Houng Lin, a specialist of East Asian maritime history at the Contemporary History Institute, Academia Sinica.

- President Allan Rock traveled to Taiwan twice in 2011 and met with the Presidents of
Taiwan’s top research universities as well as the
Minister of the National Science Council. He had
the opportunity to explore potential partnerships in various areas such as health, life
sciences, neuroscience, regenerative science, cardiology, biotechnology and
social sciences – with a particular focus on
the potential synergies between human rights

- On December 8th 2011, President Allan Rock and President of National Cheng Kung University, Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung, signed a collaboration agreement to establish joint research projects in areas of mutual interest. The event marks an important step toward initiating substantial scientific exchanges between both institutions. Also in December, he was a keynote speaker at the 2011 Conference on International Human Rights Covenants.
