Megasports and private interests: how far should we go to protect our public spaces?
Although
he admits having fun traveling around the world to conduct his research, Mark
Lowes is concerned about what his recently completed SSHRC-funded international
study of the motor-sport industry suggests about the role that “megasports” –
like the Grand Prix auto-racing competitions – play in
the economic and cultural lives of cities and its citizens.
Destigmatizing the sex trade: Bringing the oldest profession into the 21st century
Criminology Professors Colette Parent
and Christine Bruckert have set out to destigmatize and encourage public
acceptance of the world’s oldest profession, the sex trade. It is one challenge
that most academic researchers have traditionally not wanted to touch with the
proverbial ten foot pole.
Doubling up to defeat depression
As a psychopharmacological consultant, Dr. Pierre Blier often treats patients for depression — more than once. One of the most discouraging aspects of this common mental illness is its high recurrence rate. That’s why the University of Ottawa professor has dedicated himself to finding better ways to treat depression.
Paleoclimatic probing of past is key to comprehending climate change in the future
Global warming may be one of today’s hot topics, but media and public opinion on the matter stirs no passion in meteorologist Konrad Gajewski. A prisoner of conscience and dedication to his craft, the possibility of completing a methodical analysis of the decades worth of data — neatly piled folders-high on his desk — is what rouses this researcher to action.
Stress: for better or for worse
What is stress?
Whether experienced as mild stomach butterflies or a full-blown ‘feeling out of control’ panic attack, stress is an unavoidable companion to our daily life experiences. If not always welcome, it is undeniably necessary. Without stress, we would become unmotivated and apathetic creatures, unable to respond to the threats —or pleasures — of our environment.
